Abbi Pulling's first introduction to motorsports was through her dad, who drove long-circuit endurance motorbikes. "I ended up going on four wheels instead of two," she tells PS. She started her journey as an eight-year-old kid karting and entering into local championships. She went on to compete in the British F4 and the W series, garnering multiple podiums. Having most recently snagged wins during the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, she is now competing with Alpine in the F1 Academy, the female-only single-seater racing championship helmed by Formula One with Susie Wolff as managing director.

Pulling is the first to win the British Championship back-to-back and also one of the first women to drive an F1 car in Saudi Arabia, which legalized women driving and getting a license in 2018. "Driving an F1 car for the first time for anyone is super special, but the meaning and messaging behind it was so important, and it made it that much better," she says. "Eight-year-old me wouldn't believe that I was one of the females pioneering the sport and helping make a difference. There are so many people now like Wolff, Rodin Motorsport, and Alpine Academy with their race program really pushing to promote females in motorsports."

For race day prep, Pulling and her team are big on music. "I always say a happy Abbi is a fast Abbi, and it helps keep my mood high. I just absolutely love my '80s and I've recently got back into my 2000s," she says. Pulling also has a mental performance coach to help her get into the right mindset for race day. Their sessions allow her to stay focused and attentive despite what's going on around her. "For me, I always say it almost feels like silence," she says of her mental space following their work together. "Obviously, you've got the engine roaring in your ears, and you've got your engineer giving you lots of information, but it's quite peaceful. It turns into a white noise almost. You don't really process that you've got like 50 decibels constantly in your head."

When she's not on the track, she can be found exercising in the gym, working on her graphic design skills, fiddling around with Adobe Illustrator, or catching up with friends. Pulling loves to indulge in self care and destress by unleashing her inner foodie, treating herself to some takeout. She's currently watching Physical 100 on Netflix and is a true crime enthusiast.

On the heels of the success of Formula 1-based docuseries "Drive to Survive," Netflix and Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine are producing a docuseries about F1 Academy, where you can go behind-the-scenes of Pulling's 2024 season. "I struggle to drink water regularly because it just doesn't taste like anything, it's not exciting," Pulling says. As an athlete who has to perform in hot environments, the Pas Nutrition Excel Gels ($32, originally $64) help her stay hydrated and on top of her game. "I am constantly doing sweat tests to make sure that I'm hydrated enough," she reveals. Her favorite flavor is fruit punch, and the gel packs help her to keep drinking water throughout the day.

Pro Tip: Pulling also uses a water bottle with a built-in timer that reminds her to drink water often. You can get the editor-backed Hidrate water bottle, if you want an option that lets you set reminders to drink water periodically.

Abbi Pulling's Investment Must Have

Growing up, Pulling has always been interested in graphic design — and she found a way to put her creative outlet to use with her motorsport career. "I ended up needing to make my own sponsorship decks," she shares, referring to presentations she has to pitch the brands to help sponsor her career. "I taught myself how to use Adobe Creative Cloud ($60) as a 16-17-year-old so that I could put these presentations together to go in front of companies to try to convince people why they should invest in me."

She loves to play around with the programs offered in the Adobe Creative Cloud and learn new skills, whether it's brushing up on Photoshop skills or experimenting with video editing software. Pulling created her own logo and signing cards, and is currently learning about helmet customization and design. Although she is self-taught, Pulling recommends YouTube as a resource for learning graphic design. She's also learned from others in the industry, like Miles Murphy of MDM Designs, who does designs for various F1 drivers.

Pulling starts her mornings off with some Innocent Smooth Orange Juice ($4). "It's got to be no bits," she says. Noting that it's a good source of vitamin C, she says orange juice not only tastes good but also helps her build immunity. "It wakes me up in the morning. It's a routine."

Pulling's skin type leans more dry, especially around the eye area, and her go-to nighttime skin-care product is the Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream ($65). "I use it in the morning and at night just to make sure I go to bed extra, extra hydrated," she says. She discovered the moisturizer when the brand sponsored the championship this year. It has hyaluronic acid to hydrate and plump, vitamins C and E for brightening, and a bionymph peptide complex to make your skin look smoother.

Most of Pulling's travel plans involve a race weekend, and her Bell Racing Helmet HP77 ($5,000) (along with its accompanying bag) is a must. "A helmet is a very valuable thing, and you can't really put it underneath in the hold or check it in," she says. Her helmet bag is pretty much her personal item bag as she uses it to carry her various helmet visors, a few notebooks, keys, a wallet, and a few smaller necessities.
